A baby boy born in the back of a taxi in India has been named Uber by his grateful mother.

Uber driver Shahnawaz said the woman called him while in labour asking to be taken to a government hospital. She said she was travelling with two other women.

He told the Times of India: ‘I asked them to call an ambulance, but the women said that they couldn’t get one.’

The driver began heading to Safdarjung Hospital but was forced to pull over when the woman’s contractions became more painful.

He said: ‘The woman was writhing in pain and her friends did not know what to do.’
Shahnawaz said he helped the two women to create a makeshift labour ward in the back of his taxi before helping the woman to successfully deliver a healthy little boy.

He told The Times: ‘I pulled out the towels from the seats and poured some drinking water into a bowl.

‘The child was born within minutes and I was really happy to see that he was responding.’
As soon as the baby was delivered and in his mother’s arms Shahnawaz drove quickly to the hospital where he took the woman and baby to the emergency ward.

The woman, Babli, from south Delhi, India, gave her taxi driver Shahnawaz permission to name her newborn son after he helped her while she was in labour.

Shahnawaz choice of baby name was ‘Uber’ after the taxi company, to which Babli agreed.
